The musical comedy Live a Little, Love a Little was Celeste Yarnall’s only film with Elvis Presley. In the film, she plays Ellen who has all the reasons why she and Elvis won’t match. Elvis is not ready to give up and woos her by showing a box with blinking lights. Then he sings A Little Less Conversation. However, their romance doesn’t take off as Michele Carey shows up in his apartment.

About her kissing scene with Elvis

Celeste was originally auditioned for the role of Michele Carey. Later, the makers of this film created the role of Ellen for her. Celeste remembered how she was brought down to meet Elvis the day before filming their scene. She was in utter disbelief that she was getting an opportunity to meet him. Her heart had almost stopped beating and she had no idea how she got through their initial conversation.

Further, she talked about one of the first days of their shooting. The alarm clocks never worked for her. So, she relied on an answering service that called and woke her up. She was paranoid about sleeping through the time that she was supposed to wake up. Besides, she hated the sounds of alarm clocks.

On the day of the shoot, the answering service didn’t wake her up. Instead, she got a call from the second assistant director. She flew over to MGM studios and made it to the set. Talking about the big kissing scene with Elvis, she joked that she was paid to kiss him.

Celeste Yarnall and Elvis Presley meeting

Celeste recalled in one of her interviews how Elvis was shopping at The Broadway and their eyes met. She had never seen Elvis before until that moment. According to her, Elvis looked great and healthy. In the interview, she mentioned that when they did the movie, his daughter had just been born.

Celeste Yarnall and Elvis Presley had lunch together every day in Elvis’s dressing room. She felt a spiritual connection with him and they became good friends. Celeste also remembered how Elvis had an open mind and was always willing to learn. He came from a gentlemanly southern background and he loved his mother dearly.

Elvis treated Celeste like a princess and she adored him. The last time that she saw Elvis in person was in 1968. After that meeting, they spoke once and never got the chance to meet again.

On the popularity of Elvis

She saw the first performances of Elvis on the Ed Sullivan Show. Celeste recalled how she grew up watching him and was completely in awe when she met him. In her opinion, he was absolutely nice to be with. She could never forget her time with him and being a part of the camaraderie. She remembered the incident of Martin Luther King’s assassination during the interview.

Elvis was pretty much devastated by the assassination as he always had an emotional connect with the Black community. On that day, he felt as if someone had taken away a brother from him. Both of them ended up crying bitterly. She recalled that it was a very touching moment for her.

Although the success of Elvis is largely attributed to his music, his goal was to become a great actor. The roles he played in films were more of a fictionalized version of him. Their plot was not that great and it needed some good music for entertaining audiences. Nevertheless, this didn’t stop his fans from going ahead and watching those movies.

Between the years 1956 and 1969, he was seen in at least one film each year. Of course, 1959 was an exception. Elvis himself didn’t want to be typecast. So, he was quite unhappy with the business of films towards the end of his career. According to him, the producers were only taking advantage of his name and fame.

Still, his fans loved him dearly. Even today, there are many admirers of Elvis Presley across the world. Here are some of the memorable films of this legendary star that you must not miss:

1. Viva Las Vegas

This movie from 1964 had Elvis Presley and Ann-Margeret in the lead roles. Not many movies are as fun as this film. Both the stars were at the peak of their respective careers at the time. In this film, Elvis plays the character of Lucky Jacobson. He is a race car driver who tries to raise money to buy a new engine.

His intention is to compete in a race in Las Vegas. He enters a talent contest with the swim instructor of his hotel. Now, he hopes to win her heart as well as the cash prize for getting the engine.

2. King Creole

A 1958 release, King Creole is set in the French Quarter. It tells the tale of a brave child who supports his father after the death of his mother. Meanwhile, he also gets involved with two women and lands up in the company of crooks. The film also stars Carolyn Jones and Walter Matthau.

Many often consider King Creole as a quintessential Elvis movie. He was full of appreciation for the opportunity that he got through this film to play a dramatic role. The film also helped him use his singing abilities. He also mentioned that the role of Danny Fisher in the movie was his favorite.

3. Jailhouse Rock

In this film, Elvis plays the role of a construction worker who goes to jail. He is convicted of killing a man during a bar fight, but it actually happens by accident. This turns out to be an opportunity for him. He is discovered while singing on an inmate TV show.

Elvis had himself choreographed the legendary dance in Jailhouse Rock. This is just like many of the other movies of his early days. Elvis plays a typical bad boy who eventually turns out to be a good guy.

4. Blue Hawaii

There’s hardly anyone who doesn’t want to be on the beaches of Hawaii. Released in 1961, this movie tells the tale of a soldier who returns to Hawaii after his military tour. Although his mother wants him to join the family-run business of fruits, he prefers to relax on the beach. He has a girlfriend and his beach friends for company. Instead of opting for the fruit business, he joins his girlfriend’s agency as a tour guide.

Nine of Elvis Presley’s films had Norman Taurog as the director. Live a Little, Love a Little was Taurog’s last film before he went blind after the production. In this musical comedy, Elvis shares the screen with Rudy Vallee a fellow legendary musician. However, Vallee didn’t do any singing in this film.

The film features the song A Little Less Conversation, which has him wooing Celeste Yarnall on screen. Live a Little, Love a Little was based on Dan Greenburg’s 1965 novel. It was a departure from the usual films of Elvis that came out during those days.

Celeste Yarnall’s role and her thoughts on Elvis

Celeste Yarnall plays the character named Ellen in this film. She recalled some wonderful moments that she spent with Elvis during the film’s making. Celeste said that he immediately put her at ease when they met for the first time. They had a kissing scene in the film and neither of them heard the word “cut” from the director. She said that it was love at first kiss for her.

The Plot

A newspaper photographer, Greg Nolan leads a carefree life. He meets Bernice on the beach who is a lovelorn and eccentric woman. She often changes names and personalities. Although she is Alice to Greg, she is Betty to the milkman and Susie to the grocery boy. She has her dog chase Greg into the water for insulting her after their kiss.

He then receives an invitation from Bernice to stay at her home, which is located on the beachfront. She becomes a reason behind Greg getting fired from his job and evicted from his apartment. She has drugged him and he falls in a deep sleep for days.

Bernice manages to find another house for Greg. He grabs two jobs as a full-time photographer so that he could repay her. As these two jobs are in the same building, he is forced to juggle between the two. While dealing with Bernice’s eccentric ways, he finally falls in love with her.

Music

Four songs of the film had their recording at Western Recorders in Hollywood. The producer in charge of the recording session was Billy Strange. He was aware of the current trends in popular music and brought in a group of musicians. Their arrangements were different from Presley’s usual sound.

Among the tracks that gained immense popularity were A Little Less Conversation and Almost in Love. The remixed version of A Little Less Conversation became a global hit over three decades after the original’s release.

Some interesting facts

For this movie, Elvis Presley received a significant sum and a 50% share in profits. Many of his previous films involved scenes that were shot against a backdrop. In this film, he appeared in more real location scenes. They were filmed along the coast of Malibu, at Marineland, Los Angeles Music Center, and Hollywood. Along with Michele Carey, his co-stars were Dick Sargent, Don Porter, Rudy Vallee, and Celeste Yarnall.

Presley’s father had a cameo in this film. Some of the friends from his group also had their appearance in the film. Upon its release, the film didn’t impress most of the critics. It also performed poorly in the United States.
