The musical comedy Live a Little, Love a Little was Celeste Yarnall’s only film with Elvis Presley. In the film, she plays Ellen who has all the reasons why she and Elvis won’t match. Elvis is not ready to give up and woos her by showing a box with blinking lights. Then he sings A Little Less Conversation. However, their romance doesn’t take off as Michele Carey shows up in his apartment.

About her kissing scene with Elvis

Celeste was originally auditioned for the role of Michele Carey. Later, the makers of this film created the role of Ellen for her. Celeste remembered how she was brought down to meet Elvis the day before filming their scene. She was in utter disbelief that she was getting an opportunity to meet him. Her heart had almost stopped beating and she had no idea how she got through their initial conversation.

Further, she talked about one of the first days of their shooting. The alarm clocks never worked for her. So, she relied on an answering service that called and woke her up. She was paranoid about sleeping through the time that she was supposed to wake up. Besides, she hated the sounds of alarm clocks.

On the day of the shoot, the answering service didn’t wake her up. Instead, she got a call from the second assistant director. She flew over to MGM studios and made it to the set. Talking about the big kissing scene with Elvis, she joked that she was paid to kiss him.

Celeste Yarnall and Elvis Presley meeting

Celeste recalled in one of her interviews how Elvis was shopping at The Broadway and their eyes met. She had never seen Elvis before until that moment. According to her, Elvis looked great and healthy. In the interview, she mentioned that when they did the movie, his daughter had just been born.

Celeste Yarnall and Elvis Presley had lunch together every day in Elvis’s dressing room. She felt a spiritual connection with him and they became good friends. Celeste also remembered how Elvis had an open mind and was always willing to learn. He came from a gentlemanly southern background and he loved his mother dearly.

Elvis treated Celeste like a princess and she adored him. The last time that she saw Elvis in person was in 1968. After that meeting, they spoke once and never got the chance to meet again.

On the popularity of Elvis

She saw the first performances of Elvis on the Ed Sullivan Show. Celeste recalled how she grew up watching him and was completely in awe when she met him. In her opinion, he was absolutely nice to be with. She could never forget her time with him and being a part of the camaraderie. She remembered the incident of Martin Luther King’s assassination during the interview.

Elvis was pretty much devastated by the assassination as he always had an emotional connect with the Black community. On that day, he felt as if someone had taken away a brother from him. Both of them ended up crying bitterly. She recalled that it was a very touching moment for her.

Celeste was a popular model and actress, known for her beauty and entrepreneurial skills. She was not only successful in her acting career but also excelled in many things that she did. They included business, speaking, teaching, and breeding cats.

At an age when many individuals think of their retirement, she got her doctorate in nutrition. Celeste also wrote two books on caring for dogs and cats. Here are some of the famous Celeste Yarnall movies:

1. The Nutty Professor

This science fiction comedy came out in the year 1963. The film features Jerry Lewis in one of his finest and most memorable roles. It is about a scientist Julius Kelp, who creates a serum transforming him into a handsome guy. Celeste Yarnall made her debut in this film, playing the role of a college student.

The movie was selected for preservation by the Library of Congress in the United States National Film Registry. A remake of this film was released in the year 1996. This film came from the director Tom Shadyac and starred Eddie Murphy and Jada Pinkett-Smith.

2. Eve

Eve had Celeste playing her first role as a lead actress. This 1968 thriller was directed by Jeremy Summers and featured Robert Walker as Mike Yates. It also starred Herbert Lom, Fred Clark, and Christopher Lee. The director had quit midway while filming and Jesus Franco was brought in to complete the film.

Franco was a Spanish horror film director. This film was a co-production involving people from the United States, Britain, Liechtenstein, and Spain. Brazil was chosen for filming of the location scenes.

3. Live a Little, Love a Little

In the year 1968, Celeste Yarnall was seen with Elvis Presley in this film. Live a Little, Love a Little is a musical comedy from the director Norman Taurog. He had directed Presley in many of his previous films. Shortly after the production of this film came to an end, Taurog went blind. Thus, the film was his last one.

This film had the popular track A Little Less Conversation. It became the basis of a remix that became a hit in 2002 on the charts of international music sales. Live a Little, Love a Little features Celeste as Ellen.

4. Beast of Blood

Released in the United Kingdom as Blood Devils, this was a Filipino horror film. It came out in 1970 and was the last film of director Eddie Romero for Hemisphere Pictures. After the completion of this film, director-producer Romero and co-producer Kane W. Lynn went their separate ways.

In this film, Celeste plays the role of the reporter Myra Russell, investigating the explosion of a ship. Beast of Blood is a sequel to The Mad Doctor of Blood Island, which was also directed by Romero. It was also the fourth in the Blood Island series.

5. The Velvet Vampire

In this cult film, Celeste plays the titular role. She appears as a centuries-old vampire who seduces the guests of her secluded desert estate. This was a low-budget vampire film, which released in 1971. It came from the director Stephanie Rothman. She is popular for her low-budget independent films of the 1960s and 1970s.

The Los Angeles Times praised the skills of Rothman. The praise was for her handling of love scenes in the film with rare sensual beauty. The commercial reception of the film was rather disappointing. Explaining its poor performance, Rothman was of the opinion that it was not a usual horror film.

Many consider the 1963 movie, The Nutty Professor, the finest film of Jerry Lewis. He co-wrote the film’s story with Bill Richmond and was also its director. The film’s selection in 2004 for preservation in the United States National Film Registry speaks volumes about its significance.

In the year 1996, a remake of this film was released with Eddie Murphy and Jada Pinkett-Smith in leading roles. The director of the 1996 movie is Tom Shadyac. An animated sequel of the 1963 movie came out in 2008.

Celeste Yarnall’s role in the film

Celeste Yarnall made her debut with this movie, playing the role of a college student. Among her co-stars in this film were Julie Parrish and Stella Stevens.

The plot

When a bully embarrasses and attacks Professor Julius Kelp, he joins a local gym for building his body. He is a socially awkward university professor with a nerdy look. The lack of physical strength prompts him to seek a solution in chemistry. He invents a serum, which turns him into the suave, handsome, and charming ‘Buddy Love’.

The personality he has newly acquired offers him the required self-confidence to pursue one of his students. Her name is Stella Purdy. She feels a strange attraction towards Buddy Love although she resents him. With a jazzy and breezy musical performance at the Purple Pit nightclub, Buddy wows the crowd. This is the place where most of his students hang out.

While at the club, he also mocks a bartender and waitress. He also punches a student. To the utter humiliation of Kelp, his chemical formula wears off at the wrong times. He continues to take the chemical, knowing that it brings his bad alternate persona to the fore. The reason is that he enjoys the attention that his alternate avatar receives. His true identity is revealed when he performs at the annual student dance.

This happens while giving a performance at the event when the chemical formula begins wearing off. Kelp then admits his mistakes and seeks forgiveness in an impassioned speech. Purdy meets him backstage and says that she prefers Julius Kelp over Buddy Love.

About the character of Julius Kelp

For Jerry Lewis, the character of Julius Kelp was a staple in most of his shows and films. It had appeared in one of his earlier films, Rock-A-Bye Baby. The character also appeared later in the films The Family Jewels and The Big Mouth. It was also seen in a variety of sketches on The Jerry Lewis Show during late 1960s.

Many believe that Buddy Love is a lampoon of his show business partner, Dean Martin. The two of them enjoyed tremendous success from 1946 to 1956. After a disagreement, both of them stopped speaking to each other for decades. This was consistently denied by Lewis citing it as a rumor. He stated that the two characters in the film that he played represents good and evil.

However, film critic Danny Peary had something else to say about this in his book, Cult Movies. He said that the character of Buddy Love represented a dark side of Jerry Lewis.

The fourth film in the Blood Island series, Beast of Blood came out in the year 1970. In the series, the first film is Terror Is a Man. This is followed by Brides of Blood and the third film is The Mad Doctor of Blood Island. For the UK release, Beast of Blood had the title ‘Blood Devils’.

This Filipino horror film was directed by Eddie Romero. It was also his last film for Hemisphere Pictures. He and his co-producer for the film parted ways after the completion of this film.

Celeste Yarnall’s role in the film

In Beast of Blood, Celeste plays the character of Myra Russell. She is a reporter and Dr. Bill Foster’s romantic interest in the film. An interview had her talking about the film’s popularity with pride and how she got along with the Filipinos.

The plot

This movie is the continuation of The Mad Doctor of Blood Island. Upon leaving Blood Island, the ship with Dr. Bill Foster, Carlos Lopez, Sheila Willard, and her father on board explodes. Following the explosion, it sinks after the mutated chlorophyll creature is secreted on board. It has a name, Don Ramon Lopez. The creature goes on a rampage. After destroying the ship, it gets back on Blood Island and enters the jungle.

The only survivor from the ship is Dr. Foster. After spending a few months recovering in a hospital, he boards another ship and goes back to Blood Island. Also on board is Myra Russell, a reporter investigating the ship’s explosion. When Russell and Foster arrive on Blood Island, they find its natives in a state of fear. They are of the belief that the old Lopez mansion carries a curse.

Russell and Foster search the house with the ship’s captain and Ramu, who is the village headman. They find Razak alive. After a fight, the ‘green men’ are back. Myra is captured and taken to Dr. Lorca, who is alive and horribly scarred. Dr. Foster and Laida find the hidden lab of Dr. Lorca while searching the mountains. While Laida goes back to the village seeking help, Lorca shows his recent experiments to Foster.

After removing Don Ramon’s head, he has attached it to machines. Don Ramon’s decapitated body is still strapped to a table. Dr. Lorca knows that the head is able to speak, but it doesn’t say a thing. The captain, Ramu, and Laida attack Lorca’s headquarters and fight with his men. Laida succeeds in finding her father and rescues him from chlorophyll poisoning. Foster shoots Razak.

Don Ramon’s head can control his body from a distance. It wants to attack and kill Dr. Lorca, crushing his head with the machinery. An explosion in Lorca’s lab kill everyone inside. Foster and the group leave with a box containing Lorca’s notes and papers.

Release and criticism

The movie had a release with the Filipino horror film Curse of the Vampires on a double feature. Beast of Blood performed well in the theaters of New York. Considering its substantial business, producer Kane W. Lynn wanted to acquire the distribution rights of Ashley’s next film.

Later, Ashley decided to produce the film with his own production company. The film received one out of four stars from TV Guide. This magazine criticized the film for its poor production values and make-up effects.

Celeste Yarnall was a famous American actress who achieved great popularity during the 1960s and 1970s. Born Celeste Jeanne Yarnall on the 26th of July 1944, she was a resident of Long Beach in California. She was discovered by Ozzie Nelson and his son Ricky in the early 1960s.

The duo were a part of the American television sitcom, The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. Celeste appeared on this show and thus started her career in acting. In 1964, she was named ‘Miss Rheingold’ while she was modeling and acting in TV advertisements.

Film debut

Her first role as a movie actress was in the film The Nutty Professor, which came out in 1963. It was a science fiction comedy from writer-director Bill Richmond. After spotting her at the Cannes Film Festival, producer Harry Alan Towers was keen to cast her in his film. It was the 1968 thriller, Eve. This was her first role as a lead actress in a film.

The late 1960s and early 1970s

One of her memorable roles was in Star Trek: The Original Series. In this television series, she appeared as Yeoman Martha Landon in the episode The Apple. The following year, she was cast opposite Elvis Presley in a small role. The film was Live a Little, Love a Little.

Celeste played the role of a party-goer wearing a mini-dress and white fur coat. In the film, she catches the attention of Presley who then sings A Little Less Conversation. After she attended the 1968 Cannes Film Festival, she was named the ‘Most Promising New Star’ for 1968.

Later years

By the late 1970s, her acting career was on the decline. This prompted Celeste to try her luck in real estate. When she was starting out in this arena, she was told that it had limited opportunities for success. However, during her first year with a real-estate firm, she earned a six-figure income. By 1982, she was the owner of one of the top office real-estate firms in Los Angeles.

In the year 1998, she got a doctorate in nutrition. This gave her the opportunity to teach nutrition at Pacific Western University. Celeste also came up with two books later on. One of them was titled Natural Dog Care: A Complete Guide to Holistic Care for Dogs. The next book was about cats titled Natural Cat Care: A Complete Guide to Holistic Care for Cats.
